The quake struck at 9:58 am (0258 GMT) with an epicentre 156 kilometres (97 miles) southeast of the West Papua district of Kaimana, the Jakarta Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said.

It was measured at a depth of 10 kilometres but no tsunami warning was immediately issued.
