According to Asmat police chief, Korwa, the three doctors, Wendi Sitompul, Boyke Mowoka, and Hendi Prakoso, were on motor ferry Risma Jaya, when it capsized in the Arafura waters due to high tides and severe waves.

The ferry was carrying a total of 27 passengers, 19 of which were medical practitioners.

The medical team were on a temporary assignment to Asmat regency, a remote region in Papua.
