The Jayapura Immigration Office said Wednesday that it had released three Dutch journalists from detention but is still examining their immigration documents.

“They have been released but we are still examining their permits,” head of daily immigration operations Raden Hendiartono said as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.

The journalists -- Gabrielle Babette, Peter Mariaw Smith and Ronald Wigman – were detained on Tuesday for allegedly misusing their visa permit to cover a demonstration related to the arrival of Free Papua Movement (OPM) founder Nicholas Jouwe on Sunday.

Papua Governor Barnabas Suebu has expressed his regret over the arrest, saying that the journalists were invited to come to Papua by the local government. (ewd)
