Five residents of Supiori, Papua, two of them teachers, are still missing after the motorboat carrying them from Warebun village to Miosbifondi Island, both in West Supiori, capsized.

“The search is still ongoing. A 12-strong search team has been deployed to scour the northern waters off Biak Island, around Padaido Islands,” said Biak SAR head Marsudi in Biak on Monday, adding that 3-meter waves made the search difficult.

Supiori regency spokesman Yohanes Koroh said relevant agencies in Supiori regency, such as the health office, disaster mitigation agency, Indonesian Military (TNI) and police, were conducting the search.

The five residents have been identified as teachers Melkias Kafiar and Vince Kapitarau, and Frans Kafiar, Fredrik Kafiar and Mika Sawor.

“According to residents, the motorboat was also carrying sacks of cement. It might have capsized because of over capacity and heavy seas,” said Yohanes.
