Hi ,Seventeen-year-old Melianus wasshot dead by the Indonesian military on March 6. A student at a local high school, he is the latest victim of the Indonesian military's brutal operations in the Intan Jaya regency of West Papua.It's murder, says ULMWP head, Benny Wenda. Melianus joins the three members of the Bagau family, tortured and killed on February 15 whilst receiving treatment in a hospital. He joins Luther and Apinus Zanambani, beaten to death by soldiers in April last year, and their elder family member, Pastor Yeremia Zanambani, tortured, stabbed and killed in September. He joins Kristianus Yandum, a KNPB organiser murdered in Indonesian police custody on February 27.He joins the tens, possibly hundreds of thousands whose names we do not know. As the West Papua Council of Churches, representing the four biggest Protestant denominations, put it this year: 'the population of Indigenous Papuans continues to decline dramatically, starving to death in front of our eyes on their rich lands.'In colonised West Papua, the lives of Black West Papuans are treated as disposable. But West Papuans are fighting back. The huge 2019 West Papua Uprising against racism and for self-determination has pushed West Papua to the centre of Indonesia's national debate. In 2020, the colonised further reclaimed their dignity, defiantly asserting that'Papuan Lives Matter'. At the end of the year the United Liberation Movement for West Papuaformed their Provisional Government.

The people of West Papua are fighting a 21st century settler colonialism that is backed by the governments and corporations of the US, UK and Australia. BP and Freeport McMoRan extract Papua's resources whilst the original inhabitants are killed and their environment destroyed.We need a worldwide solidarity movement to shine a light on the horror and assist the West Papuans as they move ever closer to their goal: a free and fair referendum on independence. Twenty thousand new Indonesian troops have invaded West Papua in the last three years. But we have one thing they don't: people power.
