The goal of the expedition into the Jawawijaya Mtn. and Idenburg River area in West

Papua was to further our understanding of the physical and cultural characteristics of the tribal peoples in the area. Due to the remoteness and inaccessibility of the region it has remained virtually unexplored. A bonus of the expedition was a first contact in an area called Sekame or Amon, named for the “big man” or war chief who moves between Sekame and the Mamberamo area.

The expedition was awarded Explorers Club Flag # 52.
