VARIOUS OF PLANE ON SIDE OF RUNWAY STORY: An Indonesian commercial plane slipped off the runway at Tanah Merah Airport in Papua on Sunday (June 14) as it lost control while trying to land. No casualties were reported. The transport plane, a Dornier 238 model, operated by local flight company called Express Air, was flying from Sentani airport with 29 passengers and four crew onboard. The plane reportedly lost control after a dog ran across the runway and the pilot failed to handle the plane. Amateur video aired on a local news channel showed passengers were shaken after the accident. Local police spokesman Nurhabri told Metro TV that the plane lost its grip after landing, could not make a left turn, and slipped to the side of the runway. Indonesia has a poor air safety record both in military and civilian aircraft. In Papua, most of the airports have very low safety standards, like no fences preventing people or animals from trespassing. More than 100 people died after a C-130 Hercules military transport plane crashed in East Java last month. Defence Minister Juwono Sudarsono said last month that maintenance should be 20 to 25 percent of the military budget but was below 10 percent due to limited resources. ENDS.
