A Sriwijaya Air flight carrying hundreds of passengers from Manokwari in West Papua to Jayapura in Papua was forced to return to the West Papua city 15 minutes after take-off on Tuesday.

“The aircraft with the flight number 0SJ 585 took off from Rendani Airport in Manokwari at 8:30 a.m. local time, but after flying for 15 minutes, the plane returned and landed at the airport,” said Netty, a passenger, at the airport.

She explained that according to the explanation from the airline’s executive, the pilot had decided not to continue the flight and to return to Manokwari because of a minor problem with a rear door of the aircraft that caused wind to enter the cabin.

“We had been in the air for 15 minutes, but the airplane suffered some kind of accident and the pilot turned round to go back to Manokwari,” Netty said as quoted by Antara news agency.

She said no passengers protested about the pilot’s decision and waited patiently while a repair was made to the troublesome door.

Following repairs, and having been granted permission by the Transportation Ministry, the plane took off again under the same flight number.

Travelers and airline officials have become more cautious following the recent AirAsia tragedy, in which all 162 people on board are confirmed or presumed to have been killed.

The National Search and Rescue Agency, in cooperation with many others, including foreign countries, is still searching for and recovering the bodies of victims after the ill-fated plane crashed into the Karimata Strait off Central Kalimantan on Dec. 28.
