Japan Gasoline Co. Ltd. (JGC) announced in Jakarta on Wednesday that it planned to develop a 1,000-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Sorong, West Papua.
JGC Group chairman emeritus Yoshihiro Shigehisa met Vice President Jusuf Kalla to discuss the group’s plan to invest in the country’s energy sector. “We are currently preparing a number of investment projects in Indonesia’s power-supply sector to help create energy reserves for future generations,” Shigehisa said after the meeting at Kalla’s office as quoted by kompas.com.
In the first stage, he said, JGC would develop a power plant with a capacity of 50 megawatts. According to JGC Coal Fuel president director Tetsuo Fujita, the company will spend between US$200 and $300 million on the plant.
The firm has committed to begin clearing the land in Papua for the project so that construction can begin this year.
In addition, vice presidential office expert Sofjan Wanandi said that the planned JGC power plant was expected to process the lower-quality coal widespread in eastern Indonesia. “They will use the lower-quality coal that we cannot export. This project will generate electricity in eastern Indonesia,” Sofjan explained.
