The spreading of HIV/AIDS in Papua is still dominated by random sexual intercourse.
VIVAnews - The population in Papua who are positively living with HIV/AIDS until August 2010 are estimated to reach more than 5,000 people, a significant increase compared to last year.
"The health agency has yet to supply the official data. However, it is predicted that the figure has sharply risen," said Chief of HIV/AIDS Prevention Commission of Papua, Costan Karma, today, August 20.
Given the escalating number of the HIV/AIDS infected people, the virus is still threatening. "All parties have to pay attention to the case," he said.
Papua is listed the fifth top provinces in Indonesia concerning those living with HIV/AIDS. However, if the percentage of the population is put into consideration, Papua sits atop the list.
According to Costan, the spreading of HIV/AIDS in Papua is still dominated by random sexual intercourse.
Earlier, a commander of Papua military command, Major General Hotma Marbun, said around 144 Indonesian military personnel are infected with HIV/AIDS.
An anonymous VIVAnews source in Papua Police Department stated that around 84 police personnel were infected with HIV/AIDS in December 2009.
