Flash floods in West Papua on Oct. 4 have left about 8,000 internally displaced persons, Indonesian National Disaster and Mitigation Management Agency reported here Wednesday.
The evacuees have taken shelters in make shift tents in Manokwari, Nabire and Teluk Wondama, official of the agency Eka Saputra said.
"The number of refugee has climbed to 7,809 people today, they live in tents that they make by themselves," he said in the agency office here.
Floods in Wasior town of Teluk Wondama district have destroyed most of buildings and other infrastructure facilities, officials has said, adding that the floods killed 149 people and left 123 others missing.
Emergency relief aid has been channelled by war ships and planes. Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono arrived in West Papua on Wednesday.
