Four police officers are among a group of seven men who allegedly raped and tortured a 15-year-old girl in a cowardly and sickening attack in Papua, the police say.

Adj. Snr. Comr Rickho Taruna Mauruh, chief of Biak Numfor Police, said the seven suspects had been arrested and faced up to five years each in jail under Article 81 of the 2002 Child Protection Law.

The victim, a junior high school student, reportedly began communicating with one of the alleged rapists, identified as AL, a civilian, and arranged to meet in a fruit market in Biak Numfor just after midnight.

After the pair met, AL escorted the girl to Pondok Indah, where six of his friends, including the four officers, were waiting for them.

The men, reportedly drunk, began raping the victim until she passed out.

They then locked her in a room for a couple of days while the rapes continued. If she resisted, she was beaten.

Rickho said the officers involved in the rape would be “fired” for embarrassing the National Police institution.

The victim’s mother, contacted by telephone, said her daughter remained traumatized.

She said she hoped the men would face the maximum penalty under the law because they had destroyed her daughter’s future.
