Residents in Halltekamp, Jayapura, Papua discovered the remains of businessman Darwanto Oddang, 35, on Saturday afternoon after earthquake-triggered tsunami swept shores along Jayapura at 11 p.m. on Friday evening.

“The residents found him [Darwanto] at 2:30 p.m. around 100 meters from the beach. His motorcycle was found 50 meters from where we found his remains,” secretary to the Jayapura Disaster Mitigation Agency Yohanis Wemben told The Jakarta Post on Saturday.

Wemben said most residents of Halltekamp had moved to higher ground following a tsunami warning issued by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) on Friday afternoon.

Darwanto left the shelter using his motorcycle after the BMKG lifted the warning, but Darwanto did not return to the shelter until the residents discovered his body.

The tsunami swamped Halltekamp from 11 p.m. to midnight on Friday, destroying at least six houses and 10 hectare fish ponds.
