Fifteen bodies have been recovered after an Indonesian airliner crashed into the ocean near the Kaimana Airport in West Papua on Saturday afternoon.

A total of 25 people were reportedly onboard the Merpati flight, including two children, one baby, 18 adults, two pilots and two cabin crew.

Nono Sampono, head of the National Search and Rescue agency, said the plane had been destroyed on impact and sunk.

Kaimana Police Chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Antonius Wantri Julianto said the plane, from Sorong in West Papua, had been circling the airport for 15 minutes before the accident.

A local airport official said bad weather could be a factor.

A Merpati spokesman said it was unclear why the plane went down.
