The National Police says it has restored order in Puncak Jaya regency, Papua, where two local groups were involved in a bloody clash that claimed 17 lives on Sunday.

“Everything is under control,” Papua police spokesman Sr. Comr. Wachjono said as quoted by kompas.com.

“On Monday, if the weather is fine, we will send a platoon of officers [to Puncak Jaya].”

Police were investigating the motives for the clash, Wachyono said.

The clash had involved supporters of Puncak Jaya Legislative Council Speaker Elvis Tabuni and former Puncak Jaya regency caretaker Simon Alom, he said.

Both figures are candidates in the Puncak Jaya regent election scheduled for Nov. 9, 2011.
