Thousands of residents of Ilaga in Puncak regency, Papua, have requested to be evacuated after a bloody clash between two local groups left 19 people dead on the weekend.

"We received a report that many Ilaga residents were waiting for airplanes at the local airport," Mimika Transportation Agency air transport chief John Rettob said Monday as quoted by kompas.com.

"They were [apparently] even competing with each other to get into the aircraft as there were not enough planes."

Three airlines -- Trigana Air, John Lin Air, and Susy Air -- serve the Ilaga to Timika route. Both Trigana and John Lin Air have three flights a day, while the Susy Air flight leaves twice a day.

Two local groups clashed on Saturday and Sunday in a conflict related to a local election.

Police announced on Monday that order had been restored in Ilaga.
