Thousands of Papuans rallied in front of the Papuan People's Assembly in Abepura, Jayapura, on Tuesday, demanding a referendum on the province's independence from Indonesia.

“We gained freedom in 1969. Papua will demand independence until we die,” West Papua National Committee deputy chairman Mako Tabuni said during the rally.

“We've had enough with having Indonesia in Papua. It's time for us to end it,” he added.

Dozens of police officers guarded the protesters, who carried banners demanding a referendum, similar to their last rally in June, which also drew thousands of participants.

Mako said the protesters would not use violence.

More than a dozen of rallies demanding a referendum on Papuan independence from Indonesia have been staged this year, tempointeraktif.com reported.
