The Freeport Labor Union on Tuesday demanded that the Papua Police chief and local police chief be suspended following after a Freeport worker was shot dead by police during a demonstration on Monday.

Speaking at a demonstration in front of the National Police headquarters in Jakarta on Tuesday, Dorus Wakum said both leaders were responsible for the death of Petrus Ayamiseba during the strike against the PT Freeport mine in Mimika.

"Police should have protected people instead of shooting them," he said.

Dorus, who is an activist and the head of the Papuan Community Alliance Against Corruption (KAMPAK), said Papuans had also demanded the resignation of PT Freeport Indonesia CEO Armando Mahler, spokesman Ramdani Sirait and chief administrative officer Sinta Sirait.
