Unidentified gunmen shot dead three people in Timika Papua at around 4.40 a.m. on Friday, National Police spokesperson said.

"It was at Timika Km 38, when a driver named Aloysius Margono was shot dead from the right hand side of his car," the spokesman Insp. Gen Anton Bachrul Alam told reporters on Friday afternoon.

He said that 15 minutes later, two other people, Yunus and Eto, apparently gold miners, were shot dead at Km 39.

Anton said that based on the testimony of 11 witnesses, the perpetrators were a group of 10 people who carried two rifles, an M-16 and an AK-47.

He added that the police have deployed four units to hunt the perpetrators.

The police are continuing to investigate. (rpt)
