Adj. Comr. Dominggus Awes, the chief of Mulia Airport Police in Puncak Jaya, Papua, was shot dead by unknown assailants on Monday.

During the shooting, Dominggus was allegedly attacked by two separatists, Papua Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Wahyono said Monday as quoted by tribunnews.com.

“The armed separatist attacked the Mulia Airport Police chief. He was shot in the nose and chest,” he said.

Dominggus’s remains have been taken to Mulia Hospital for an autopsy. Police are investigating the incident.

Violence has been on the increase in Papua in recent months with tensions flaring up over various concerns, including certain groups' wish to see Papua become a separate state.
