National Police chief Gen. Timur Pradopo said all police officers in Papua, especially in Puncak Jaya regency, were on high alert after the shooting death of Mulia Police chief Adj. Comr. Dominggus Oktavianus Awes on Monday.

Timur said the police had set up a team to investigate the case and hunt down the gunman.

“Let’s wait for the result,” Timur said as quoted by tribunnews.com.

The police have asked for help from the military and other law enforcers to resolve the case.

Timur said the police had yet to learn the motive behind the shooting.

“The perpetrator must be someone from a separatist group,” he said.

Newly installed State Intelligent Agency director Marciano Norman said his agency would do its best to prevent a similar incident from happening.
