NUSA DUA: Speaking generally, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said that when security forces defended themselves during conflicts, they did not commit any human rights violations.

“I think when they defended themselves, it was not a crime nor a human rights violation. But if they went overboard, of course they will be charged according to the procedures,” he said during the ASEAN meeting in Nusa Dua, Bali.

Yudhoyono has ordered all security forces to cooperate in handling unrest in Papua according to procedures. He also promised in front of US President Barack Obama that he would enforce the law.

“I promise that laws will be enforced in Papua. If there is a military force member or a police officer who violates the law or human rights we will process them through the courts. No impunity,” he said as quoted by news portal tribunnews.com.

He said he hoped that other countries would understand that there was a separatist movement in Papua.

“I’m thankful that the US and Australia support and acknowledge the territorial integrity of Indonesia, which includes Papua,” he said.
