Nederland moet de onafhankelijkheidsstrijd van de Papoea's in Nieuw-Guinea ondersteunen, vindt de PVV. Kamerlid Wim Kortenoeven wil dat minister Uri Rosenthal (VVD) van Buitenlandse Zaken de Indonesische regering op het hart drukt géén geweld meer te gebruiken tegen de Papoea-seperatisten.
Kortenoeven: Geen geweld tegen Papoea's
In elk geval moeten Nederlandse diplomaten op 1 december aanwezig zijn bij het voorlezen van de onafhankelijkheidsverklaring op Nieuw-Guinea. Dan kan een bloedbad worden voorkomen, zegt Kortenoeven.
Het PVV-kamerlid sprak bij de begrotingsbehandeling van Buitenlandse Zaken. Hij droeg een speldje met de ‘morgenstervlag’ op het revers. Die vlag was in 1961 een geschenk van Nederland aan de Papoea’s ter ondersteuning van hun streven naar onafhankelijkheid.
Stamhoofden
Nederland deed - na een verloren oorlog tegen Indonesië - de kolonie in 1962 over aan de Verenigde Naties. Voorwaarde was dat de bevolking zich in een referendum kon uitspreken over onafhankelijkheid.
In 1969 raadpleegden de VN een aantal stamhoofden. Volgens Kortenoeven kozen zij in ruil voor allerlei geschenken en valse beloften voor aansluiting bij Indonesië. Sindsdien treedt het Indonesische leger hard op tegen Papoea’s die streven naar een eigen staat.
Ereschuld
Kortenoeven kreeg in de Kamer meteen steun van GroenLinks. ‘U vindt mij aan uw zijde,’ zei Mariko Peters. Bijval van VVD-minister Rosenthal ligt minder voor de hand. Tot nu toe gingen ministers van Buitenlandse Zaken in hun contacten met Indonesië dit gevoelige thema zoveel mogelijk uit de weg.
Niet alleen vanwege de economische relatie, maar ook omdat het koloniale verleden noopt tot terughoudendheid. Op de vraag of de Papoea’s er wel bij gebaat zijn als uitgerekend Nederland zich met hun kwestie gaat bemoeien, zei Kortenoeven dat hij niet pleit voor seperatisme, maar wel voor zelfbeschikking. ‘Nederland draagt een ereschuld met zich mee,’ aldus het PVV-kamerlid.

Tribal chiefs
The Netherlands handed over the colony to The United Nations after a lost war
against Indonesia. A condition was that the population would be able to give
their opinion about independence in a referendum.
In 1969 the UN consulted a number of tribal chiefs. According to Kortenoeven
they voted for affiliation with Indonesia in exchange for gifts of every kind
and false promises. Ever since the Indonesian army acts with force against
Papuans striving for an independent state.
Debt of honor
Kortenoeven immediately gained support of the Groen Links-party (GreenLeft) in
the House. 'I'm on your side', Mariko Peters said. Acclaim by Minister of
Foreign Affairs Rosenthal was less obvious. Until now the Ministers of Foreign
Affairs avoided this delicate subject very carefully in their contacts with
Indonesia.
Not only because of the economic relationship, but also because the colonial

interference in the matter, Kortenoeven answered that he is not pleading
separatism, but he does plea for self-determination. According to the
PVV-Member of Parliament "The Netherlands carry a debt of honour with them".
