Jakarta - Two police officers were killed in an ambush in the Mulia Puncak Jaya district in Papua province, local media said Saturday.

The police were reportedly killed after armed civilians - suspected members of the Free Papua Organization - attacked them with bows and arrows.

The two victims are just the most recent police officers to have died in recent attacks in the resource rich province.

In October, two suspected separatist rebels grabbed a gun belonging to a local police chief and shot him dead.

Papua, Indonesia's easternmost province, is the scene of a low-level separatist insurgency, and pro-independence sentiment runs high among its population.
