A helicopter owned by copper and gold miner PT Freeport Indonesia was shot at in the province of Papua on Saturday, injuring one passenger.

“The helicopter was carrying workers and logistics. One passenger was injured by shattered glass,” Freeport spokesman Ramdani Sirait told The Jakarta Post in an email on Saturday.

“The police are investigating the case with the full support of Freeport.”

He said the helicopter was flying from Timika to Tembaga Pura.

Saturday is the first day striking workers were returning to their stations after both management and workers agreed on a wage increase.

Both parties reached the agreement Tuesday to increase wages by up to 40 percent: 24 percent in the first year and 13 percent in the second year.

The Freeport labor union said the agreed increase was actually still below its initial demand of US$7.40 per hour, but eventually decided to settle. (nvn)
