Cars cannot use the road heading to the Rendani Airport in Manokwari, West Papua, after people felled four big trees to block the road following their disappointment over the loss of Dominggus Mandacan in the West Papua gubernatorial election.

Passengers now have to take motorcycle taxis to the airport, as only two-wheeled vehicles can pass the road, kompas.com reported. At the airport, about 30 policemen and military officers stood guard in anticipation of any unexpected incidents.

On Tuesday, many passengers were stranded at the airport for hours and later took fishermen’s boats to the city by the river. Each of them paid Rp 25,000 (US$2.75).

Despite the incident, airport head Bambang Hartarto said that flights remained normal.

On Tuesday, angry mobs also set fire to the house of the elected governor Abraham O Ataruri.
