TEMPO InteractiveJayapura, Papua:Shootings conducted by police against civilians have occurred once again. This time Brig. Edi Kurni, a Raja Ampat police precinct officer, shot Yery Wakum while the officer was allegedly drunk. Yery was a security officer at the Sorong Regional Hospital.

Information received by TEMPO revealed that the incident started when the member of the Raja Ampat Precinct Criminal Detective Division member caused a commotion outside the hospital. Yery responded to the racket and calmed the officer down. However, the officer rampaged and shot Yery to death—the bullet penetrated Yery’s left chest through his right. The shooter then fled. Furthermore, the Papua Police Spokesman Adj. Sr. Comr. Yohanes Nugroho Wicaksono told a different version. According to the spokesman, the victim, 37-year-old Yery Wakum, the suspect or the perpetrator and some witnesses, Musa Senggemui, 50; Lois Sugiare; and three others had been drinking liquor in front of the motorcycle-taxi station right in front of the Sorong Hospital.

“The suspect Brig. Edi Kurni suddenly fired and the bullet struck the victim who works at the Sorong Regional Hospital as a security officer,” said Yohanes. The bullet penetrated the left ribs and went through the victim’s right ribcage. The victim died in the hospital. “So far, we are still chasing after the perpetrator and seven people have been questioned,” Yohanes added on Thursday.
