The Germany embassy says it has conflicting reports about the shooting of a German citizen on Jayapura Beach in Papua on Tuesday.

“We have contradicting information, so far we cannot comment on anything,” an official at the German embassy told The Jakarta Post, adding he would gain more information on Wednesday.

Pieter Dietmar Helmut, 55, was shot several times while sightseeing at the Base G seashore with his Spanish wife, Medina Pachon.

The shots were fired by an unknown man who got out of a blue Toyota Avanza.

Helmut was taken to Jayapura General Hospital for surgery.

Papua Health Agency head Dr. Joseph Rinta, who operated on Helmut, said the German was in stable condition and was showing signs of recovery.

Papua Police chief Insp. Gen. BL Tobing said separately that the police were still searching for the attacker, who he believed was still within the city.
