The police on Monday named Sepnat Karat as a suspect in the killing of Yusuf Badi, who died after supposedly being stabbed in the chest during last Friday’s scrap among Papuan students in Bandung.

Bandung Wetan Police chief Comr. Wiharyatmo said that the suspect, a student of Sangga Buana University from Sorong, Papua, had been detained by his office.

“The suspect is charged under Article 351 and 338 of the Criminal Code on abuse and murder,” he said.

The articles carry a maximum sentence of seven and 15 years jail term respectively.

Wiharyatmo declined to comment on the motive behind the killing.

The brawl occurred in front of the Papuan students’ dorm on Jl. Cilaki in Bandung and was seemingly triggered by an argument between Sepnat and Yusuf.

Sepnat was reportedly enraged when he heard Yusuf asking his friends to clean up the mess left after Sepnat drank beers at the dormitory.

The altercation soon escalated into a brawl involving many residents of the dormitory.

During the fight, Sepnat found a knife in the dormitory garage and used it in self-defense.

Sepnat said that he only swung the knife to protect himself and did not say anything about stabbing Yusuf.
