National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) commissioner Natalius Pigai has apologized to the Indonesian Military (TNI) and the families of the soldiers recently killed in Papua.

“Even though the statement was meant to a wakeup call but I’m now fully realize that I picked the wrong time to speak. For that, I apologize,” said Natalius before going into a closed meeting with TNI commander Adm Agus Suhartono in Jakarta on Wednesday as quoted from Antara news agency.

Natalius said that soldiers killed in Papua last week lacked awareness and were sitting ducks when ambushed en route to Sinak airstrip to pick up communication devices.

Military spokesperson, Rear Adm., Iskandar Sitompul said the TNI had accepted Natalius’ apology. (rkh)
