Home Minister Gamawan Fauzi inaugurated Lukas Enembe and Klemen Tinal on Tuesday as Papua governor and deputy governor, respectively, for 2013-2018 at the Mandala Stadium in Jayapura, Papua, following two years of interim governorship.

The inauguration ceremony, which was attended by thousands of Papuans, was the first gubernatorial inauguration to take place on a soccer pitch.

Gamawan told Lukas and Klemen to provide good public services for the sake of people’s welfare.

“Papua is rich. If all parties have a common vision to develop Papua, I am convinced that one day, it won’t only be Papua’s soccer team beating Jakarta, but the province as a whole will be more prosperous than other provinces in Indonesia,” he said.

In his inauguration speech, Governor Lukas Enembe urged everybody living in Papua to unite to eliminate segregation and improve people’s well-being.

Lukas said he would alleviate poverty, negligence, isolation and injustice through Law No. 21/2001 on Papuan Special Autonomy.

Lukas and Klemen were elected governor and deputy governor after winning 52 percent of the vote in the gubernatorial election on Jan. 29.
