A special team from the Papua Police arrested and detained three people for allegedly smuggling guns into the province.

The police also seized three guns and 123 bullets. Papua Police chief Insp. Gen. Tito Karnavian told reporters in Jayapura on Thursday that the three were arrested in Sorong on Monday as they were about to leave for Nabire on board the KM Lambelu ship.

They were identified as Simon Kararbo of Papua and Manase Wesara and Roger Koloba of Tobelo, North Maluku.

Simon had the task of providing the guns and contacting Manase and Roger.

With Rp 120 million (US$10,087) in his possession, he headed to Tobelo and obtained the three guns and ammunition to be delivered to a group of alleged criminals in Paniai led by a man named Leo Yogi.

“The suspects confessed that the guns were leftovers of the Ambon conflict, but there is also the suspicion that they were smuggled in from the Philippines,” Tito said.

The suspects were charged with violating Article 1 of Law No. 12/1951 on illegal gun possession, which carried the death penalty.
