Jakarta. Police are investigating what caused a passenger jet to skid off the runway after landing at an airport in Papua on Saturday afternoon.

No one was injured in the incident, which occurred at the Wamena district airport and involved a Boeing 737 operated by Jayawijaya Dirgantara Air, Papua Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Pudjo Sulistyo told the Jakarta Globe. The plane had taken off from Sentani Airport in Jayapura, the provincial capital, an hour’s flight away.

“The plane actually landed smoothly at first, but then the control stick for the front wheels broke, causing it to skid off the runway,” Pudjo said.

The plane could not be removed immediately from the runway, forcing airport officials to temporarily suspend all flights for several hours.
