Angry residents burned down 17 houses in Arso district, Keerom regency, Papua, on Saturday morning following the killing of a resident, identified as Catur Yudo Wastuti, while she cleaned her house.

One of the residents, Indra, said the incident started when a man named Hilarius Gombo stabbed Catur in what appeared to be an unprovoked attack. He said Catur did not have time to protect herself.

“Without saying anything, he [Hilarius] suddenly stabbed her in the neck with his machete. She died at the scene,” he told The Jakarta Post on Saturday.

Indra said Hilarius was drunk when he attacked Catur. He added that the two knew each other and that Hilarius had frequently visited Catur’s house as a friend.

He said Hilarius’ actions had outraged local residents, who had then attempted to avenge the death of their neighbor by setting fire to several houses located close to Hilarius’ house.

Keerom Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Pasero said the police had detained Hilarius for further questioning and had curbed the riot.

He said a group of police officers were still on standby to maintain order.
