The Jayapura District Court acquitted on Monday two defendants, John Way and Doren Wakerwa, who were former acting regents of Lanny Jaya regency, Papua, of a corruption charge worth Rp 3 billion (US$240,000) relating to the regency’s election committee.

Presiding judge Marthinus Bala said the defendants were not guilty in granting the funds to the election committee during a regent election in 2011, although there was no memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two parties as required by the Home Ministry.

“The MoU is an administrative matter. It cannot be used to charge the defendants,” Marthinus said.

Earlier, prosecutors had asked the court to sentence the defendants to six years in prison and a fine of Rp 50 million each.
