Papua’s herdachten de 1ste december in Jakarta, Makassar, Yogyakarta, Palu, Poso, Ternate, Jayapura, Manokwari, Merauke, Sorong, Timika en Wamena. Om de menigte te verspreiden gebruikte de politie in Jakarta waterkanonnen en ging over tot arrestaties.
Politie schoot met scherp op een protesterende menigte waarbij Onesimus Rumayom (45 jaar) werd gedood en 8 gewonden vielen.
Het Comité van de Verenigde Naties voor de uitbanning van Rassendiscriminatie heeft een procedure met betrekking tot de situatie van de mensenrechten in West Papua gestart i.v.m. het groeiend aantal mensenrechtenschendingen.
Rapportage vooruitlopend op de UPR voor Indonesië in 2017Kerkleiders uit Papua en West Papua bekritiseren regering en politie over o.a. de vele gevallen van buitengerechtelijke executies, de aanhoudende racisme tegen Papoea's en de economische en culturele achterstelling van de inheemse bevolking in een gezamenlijke verklaring.

Violence at December 1st demonstration
On 1st December 1961 the Morning star flag was officially raised for the first time. Since that day, many Papuans commemorate the 1st of December as their “Independence Day”. Every year demonstrations and orations take place, which are often violently dispersed by security forces.
The Papuan Students Alliance (AMP) and a group named „Front Rakyat Indonesia“ (Indonesian Peoples' Front)carried out a joint demonstration in Jakarta on December 1st 2016.
The police responded with water canons to disperse the crowd.

Police shoots into crowd - one dead, many injured
On October 26 2016, approximately at 23.00, Police forces opened fire at a group of protesters who had built a roadblock and burned car tires at Yos Sodarso Street, Sanggeng area, Manokwari. Local residents of Papuan origin had built the roadblock after a community member named Vigal Pauspaus was stabbed by an unknown perpetrator from Makassar in a dispute over an unpaid bill.
UN committee initiates early warning procedure on West Papua
The United Nations Committee for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination has initiated an early warning and urgent action procedure regarding the human rights situation in West Papua. Non-governmental organisations had drawn the committees attention to a growing number of human rights violations and injustice during its 90th session between August 2nd and 26, 2016. The civil society reports describe allegations of excessive use of force, arrests, killings, torture, arbitrary arrests and strong limitations on the freedom of assembly and association towards indigenous Papuans.

Submissions for UPR of Indonesia
The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is a mechanism of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) which periodically examines the human rights performance of all 193 UN Member States.
Several organisations based in Europe and in Indonesia have submitted reports in which the human rights situation in West Papua is highlighted for the UPR of Indonesia in 2017. You can read the ICP report here. The Westpapua-Netzwerk, Watch Indonesia! and the World Organisation against Torture (OMCT) have also submitted an extensive joint report which you can download here. The Papuan Coalition for Enforcement of Law and Human Rights in Papua submitted three reports on Civil and political rights, on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and the situation of Women's Rights. Church leaders issue joint statement on West Papua
The leaders of the Indonesian Evangelical Church (GIDI), the Papuan Tabernacle Church (KINGMI) and the Baptist Church in West Papua have issued a joint statement in which they strongly criticise the Indonesian government and the police. They mention, among other things, the many cases of extra judicial killings, the continued racism towards Papuans and the economical and cultural disadvantages suffered by the indigenous population.
