Aussie NGO says one activist shot dead

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (Radio New Zealand International, May 18, 2010) – An Australian based NGO [non-governmental organization] is raising concern over security for the civilian population in the Puncak Jaya region of West Papua in Indonesia.

The  Australian West Papua Association claims security forces are conducting an operation in the area, hunting members of the Free Papua Movement, the OPM.

A spokesperson, Joe Collins, says one OPM member has been shot dead and he says the security forces claim to have seized a number of weapons and a quantity of ammunition.

Mr Collins says the problems in West Papua won’t be solved by deploying more troops.

He says what is needed is dialogue between Jakarta and West Papuan representatives.
